Meet the Team: Spencer Marcinko, Our new Data Scientist

We’re thrilled to introduce Spencer Marcinko, one of the newest additions to the EPCON team. Spencer joined us a month and a half ago as a Junior Data Scientist after completing his Master’s degree in Data Science, bringing with him a strong foundation in Applied Mathematics and Physics.
What excites Spencer most about data science is its power to drive significant change. “I’m really excited to use data science in a way that can help the world,” he shares. “Solving problems that can make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. Applying data science techniques in the medical field for prediction and management of infectious diseases feels like a fantastic way to do that.”
Despite being new to the public health space, Spencer isn’t daunted. Without a medical background, identifying which variables are most useful in public health predictions can be challenging. But he finds confidence in the expertise of his colleagues. “There are many medical professionals,” he says, “so what I may lack, the team has in spades.”
Spencer also brings a thoughtful perspective to predictive modeling. “Predictive models are never truly 100 percent accurate. And they never will be. But with continued knowledge and implementation, the results may improve by small margins – which, as minor as they seem, can in reality save hundreds or even thousands of lives when scaled to large populations.”
He’s particularly passionate about the role of high-quality data, both for initial predictions and evaluating outcomes. He explains it as follows: “Good data is crucial. This helps everyone involved in both formulating more precise predictions and generating tailored plans of action afterward.”
Outside of work, Spencer is always on the move. A self-described sporty guy, you’ll likely find him spending his weekends surfing, playing basketball, football, or squash.
