Strengthening Tuberculosis Control Through AI and Geospatial Intelligence

Predicted all forms TB positivity rate in Kenya
Project Context
Kenya remains one of the high TB burden countries globally, requiring innovative approaches to improve case detection, treatment outcomes, preventive therapy coverage, and resource allocation. In partnership with the Centre for Health Solutions (CHS) and national stakeholders, we supports Kenya's TB programme through the Epi-control platform, providing advanced analytics and geospatial decision-support tools to strengthen programme performance at the local level.
EPCON's Approach
The Epi-control platform integrates routine programme data, demographic information, accessibility indicators, and contextual risk factors into a single interactive environment. By leveraging artificial intelligence and spatial analytics, the platform helps programme managers identify priority areas, optimise interventions, and monitor progress in real time.
Key functionalities implemented in Kenya include:
-
Hyperlocal TB risk mapping to identify areas at highest risk of transmission and undiagnosed disease;
-
Monitoring and optimisation of TB Preventive Therapy (TPT) coverage and completion;
-
Treatment outcome analysis to identify locations with lower treatment success rates;
-
Spatial hotspot analysis to detect persistent areas of concern over time;
-
Identification of vulnerable communities requiring additional support;
-
Diagnostic network optimisation to improve access to TB services;
-
Capacity building and training to strengthen local ownership and sustainability.
Supporting Better Treatment Outcomes
Beyond case finding, EPCON supports the Kenyan TB programme in understanding where and why treatment outcomes differ across communities. The platform visualises treatment success rates, cure rates, loss-to-follow-up rates, mortality, and other key indicators at a highly granular geographic level.
Advanced spatial analyses identify recurring hotspots of poor treatment outcomes, allowing programme teams to target interventions where they are needed most. By combining treatment data with vulnerability indicators and predicted TB burden estimates, the platform helps prioritise communities that face both a high disease burden and challenges in completing treatment successfully.
Advancing Preventive Therapy
The platform also supports the monitoring of TB Preventive Therapy by tracking contact investigation, evaluation, treatment initiation, and treatment completion. This enables programme managers to identify implementation gaps and improve preventive care for people at increased risk of developing TB.
Building Sustainable Capacity
A key component of EPCON's work in Kenya is strengthening local capacity. Through continuous training, technical support, and collaborative model development, programme teams are empowered to use data more effectively for planning, monitoring, and decision-making.
